Why is Science important?

Children are naturally curious and our Science curriculum provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Science impacts every aspect of our lives and is essential to both protect and improve our lives and provide us with the skills and resources to protect our planet.

In an increasingly data rich society, science can start to equip pupils with the skills they will need to filter, evaluate and analyse information and the confidence to draw their own conclusions.

Aims of the Science Curriculum

The national curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all children:

• develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
• develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
• are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
• develop the essential scientific enquiry skills to deepen their scientific knowledge.
• use a range of methods to communicate their scientific information and present it in a systematic, scientific manner, including I.C.T., diagrams, graphs and charts.
• develop a respect for the materials and equipment they handle regarding their own, and other children’s safety.
• develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery.

Our Science Curriculum

Our Science curriculum promotes children’s engagement and enthusiasm in the subject. We actively seek opportunities to teach children that science permeates every aspect of daily life, encouraging children to be inquisitive in lessons and beyond.

Our carefully sequenced, progressive science curriculum supports children in developing both their scientific knowledge and scientific enquiry skills, building on previous learning. By fostering a natural curiosity, children develop an understanding and respect for living organisms and the physical environment.

The focus of teaching and learning is the introduction of scientific knowledge through interleaved teaching, revisiting previous learning regularly; explicit teaching of key vocabulary and embedding vocabulary though oracy; and opportunities to develop scientific enquiry skills through experimentation, observation and interpretation of scientific processes.
