Welcome to PSHE
Why is PSHE/RSE important?
PSHE underpins all subject areas. It develops the qualities and attributes that children need to manage opportunities, challenges and responsibilities as they grow up, enabling them to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, an effective PSHE programme can tackle barriers to learning and raise aspirations for our pupils.
Aims of the PSHE/RSE Curriculum
Laureate Community Academy aspires to provide excellent opportunities for PSHE so that children develop understanding of: ·
- The Wider World. Children will learn to understand the wider world helping them to become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them. ·
- Health and wellbeing. Children will learn how to stay safe and healthy. They will learn how to improve their mental health and wellbeing, learning how to ask for help if needed.
- Relationships. Children will learn the importance of positive relationships both within families and with friends. They will learn how we change and develop as we grow up.
Safeguarding is paramount throughout this, with teaching developing the children’s knowledge of when and how they can ask for help.
At Laureate Community Academy our mission statement underpins everything we do.
REACH which stands for: RESPECT, ENJOY, ASPIRE, COMMUNICATE and BE HEALTHY is evident throughout every area of the curriculum including PSHE and RSE.
Our programme aims to assist children to prepare for adult life by supporting them through their physical, emotional and moral development; and helping them to understand themselves, respect others and form and sustain healthy relationships.
By the time children leave Laureate Community Academy they will have an understanding of how they can keep both their body and mind healthy. They will have an understanding of emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, understand what makes a healthy relationship and an overview of sex, human sexuality and sexual health.
The curriculum will equip children and young people with the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships, to understand their sexuality and to take responsibility for their sexual health and well-being. Children will understand the effects of influences in the wider world, how to stay safe and have an understanding of money management.
